Description

What is Fexofenadine and what is it used for?

Fexofenadine is an antihistamine that is used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever. It is a prescription only medication that can be supplied by our very own trained pharmacist under a patient group direction for patients presenting with symptoms of allergic rhinitis. This is where there is an allergy to something like pollen, dust or moulds which leads to an irritation to your nose; causing cold-like symptoms.

How does fexofenadine work?

Antihistamines work by preventing the effects of a chemical produced by the body, known as histamine. The release of histamines is what causes itching, sneezing and watery eyes. Therefore, taking fexofenadine as directed will help with these symptoms as it inhibits the release of histamines in the body.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis

Some of the most common symptoms of allergic rhinitis are similar to that of a cold and include:
Sneezing
Itchy nose
Runny nose
Blocked nose
Cough

These symptoms usually occur within minutes of coming into contact with something you’re allergic to.

Causes of allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is caused by an allergic reaction to:
Pollen from trees, grass and weeds ( hay fever)
Dust mites
Animals such as cats and dogs
Mould
Latex
Dust

Treatment details

One tablet is taken daily before food. The duration of treatment depends on the patient and on the cause of the allergic rhinitis.

It is also advised to leave 2 hours between the administration of fexofenadine and aluminium and magnesium containing antacids.

How can you treat allergic rhinitis yourself?

You can usually treat allergic rhinitis yourself without seeing a GP. If you can, best practice is to try to avoid the things that can trigger your allergies. A pharmacist can also advise you about some of the medicines that you can buy over the counter that can help, such as:

Antihistamines

Decongestant nasal sprays or drops
Salt water nasal sprays or solutions
