Description

What is nausea and vomiting?

Nausea and vomiting are both physiological responses that can occur as a result of various triggers and conditions.

  1. Nausea:
    • Definition: Nausea is the sensation of discomfort in the stomach that often precedes vomiting. It is a subjective feeling that something is wrong and can be associated with a feeling of queasiness or an urge to vomit.
    • Causes: Nausea can be caused by a wide range of factors, including motion sickness, pregnancy (morning sickness), certain medications, infections, gastrointestinal issues, migraines, and other medical conditions.
    • Mechanism: The exact mechanisms of nausea are complex and involve signals from the digestive system, brain, and nervous system. It is often a protective response by the body to prevent the ingestion of potentially harmful substances.
  2. Vomiting (Emesis):
    • Definition: Vomiting is the forceful expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth. It is a reflex action that can be triggered by various stimuli.
    • Causes: Vomiting can be a response to the same factors that cause nausea, such as infections, motion sickness, pregnancy, and certain medical conditions. It can also be a protective mechanism to rid the body of toxins or irritants.
    • Mechanism: Vomiting is coordinated by a center in the brainstem called the vomiting center. It involves a series of muscular contractions, including those of the diaphragm, abdominal muscles, and the muscles lining the digestive tract.

In many cases, nausea and vomiting are short-lived and may be the body’s way of responding to an acute issue, such as food poisoning or a stomach virus. However, persistent or severe symptoms may be indicative of underlying medical conditions, and it’s important to seek medical attention if needed. Dehydration is a common concern with vomiting, and maintaining hydration through small sips of clear fluids is important.

Treatment for nausea and vomiting depends on the underlying cause, and addressing the root issue is key to managing these symptoms effectively.

What is metoclopramide?

Metoclopramide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as prokinetic agents. It is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal issues such as nausea and vomiting, as well as to improve gastric emptying. Metoclopramide works by increasing the movement of the stomach and intestines, which helps food move more easily through the digestive system.

Metoclopramide works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain and increasing the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that enhances the contractions of the stomach muscles.

It’s important to note that while metoclopramide can be effective in certain situations, it is not without potential side effects. Common side effects may include drowsiness, restlessness, and gastrointestinal symptoms. In some cases, it may cause more serious side effects, particularly when used for an extended period.

How to take metoclopramide

One tablet should be taken up to three times a day for 5 days. The doses should be spaced at least 6 hours apart.

Following a successful consultation with our clinical pharmacist a supply can be made, under a patient group direction if treatment is suitable for you. However, if you are not eligible and/ or need to be referred to another practitioner then a supply will not be made and a full refund will be issued
