Description

What is Rhinolast and what is it used for?

Rhinolast nasal spray contains the antihistamine Azelastine hydrochloride. Antihistamines are designed to provide relief from the symptoms of allergies that specifically affect the nose (allergic rhinitis). These symptoms include;

  • congestion
  • sneezing
  • a runny nose

Azelastine hydrochloride has proven effective against allergies to pollens (hay fever), as well as allergies to household irritants, such as dust mites and animal dander.

What is allergic rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is an allergic reaction that occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air. These allergens can be outdoor or indoor substances such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, or certain chemicals.

When a person with allergic rhinitis comes into contact with these allergens, their immune system mistakes them for harmful invaders and releases chemicals, such as histamine, triggering allergic symptoms. These symptoms typically affect the nose and eyes and may include:

  • Sneezing: Often repetitive and uncontrollable.
  • Runny or stuffy nose: Nasal congestion, itching, or a constant dripping sensation.
  • Itchy or watery eyes: Eyes may feel irritated, red, or swollen.
  • Postnasal drip: A sensation of mucus dripping down the throat.
  • Coughing: Especially due to postnasal drip.
  • Itchy throat or ears: Irritation or discomfort in the throat or ears.
  • Fatigue: Feeling tired or low energy due to disrupted sleep from symptoms.

Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal, occurring during specific times of the year when certain allergens, like pollen, are prevalent (known as seasonal allergic rhinitis), or it can persist year-round when triggered by indoor allergens (known as perennial allergic rhinitis).

Treatment options for allergic rhinitis include avoiding allergens when possible, using medications such as antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, decongestants, and in some cases, allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) to desensitize the immune system to specific allergens.

How does Rhinolast work?

Rhinolast contains the active ingredient azelastine hydrochloride, which belongs to a class of medicines known as antihistamines. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance that the body releases during an allergic reaction.

Azelastine in Rhinolast works by blocking these histamine receptors in the nasal passages. By doing so, it prevents histamine from binding to these receptors and triggering the allergic response. This action helps reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, providing relief from sneezing, itching, congestion, and runny nose.

Rhinolast, typically available as a nasal spray, delivers azelastine directly to the nasal passages, targeting the site where the allergic reactions occur. By inhibiting the effects of histamine locally in the nasal tissues, it helps alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis.

How to use Rhinolast ?

Rhinolast is used in patients 6 years and over presenting for treatments of seasonal/ perennial allergic rhinitis.

1 puff into each nostril, twice daily (morning and evening)

The duration of treatment depends on the patient, and on the cause of the allergic rhinitis.
