Why The Shingles Vaccine Matters?
Shingles causes a painful rash and can sometimes lead to serious complications such as persistent nerve pain, hearing impairment, or even blindness. Your risk of developing shingles—and suffering complications—increases as you age or if your immune system is severely compromised.
Receiving the shingles vaccine significantly:
- Lowers your risk of developing shingles
- Reduces the severity of complications if you do contract shingles
Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?
The shingles vaccine is particularly beneficial for:
- Adults turning 65 on or after 1st September 2023
- Individuals aged between 70 and 79
- Adults aged 50 and over with a severely weakened immune system
It’s important to remember that shingles can occur more than once, so vaccination is beneficial even if you’ve previously had shingles.
Who Should Avoid the Shingles Vaccine?
Most eligible individuals can safely receive the vaccine. However, you should avoid it if you’ve previously experienced a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to either the vaccine itself or one of its ingredients. If you’re feeling unwell—especially with a high temperature—wait until you feel better before having the vaccine.
Possible Side Effects
Most individuals experience only mild side effects, which typically resolve within 2 to 3 days. Common reactions include:
- Swelling, itching, bruising, or soreness at the injection site
- Headaches
- Body aches
- Tiredness
- Fever
- Shivering or chills
