As part of the NHS Pharmacy First Service, our team can provide you with advice and treatment recommendations to help soothe a sore throat, including both over-the-counter remedies and medications that were previously only available with a prescription from your GP. What is a sore throat?
A sore throat is a feeling of pain or discomfort in the throat. They are very common, especially during the winter months, usually, they are nothing to worry about and get better within a week. However, if your sore throat is particularly painful you can seek advice from the team at Star Pharmacy.
What are the symptoms of a sore throat?
Sore throats are very common and usually caused by viruses like a cold or the flu, from smoking, or occasionally they may be caused by bacteria. They can also be caused by:
- Tonsillitis – an infection of the tonsils at the back of your throat
- Strep throat – a bacterial throat infection
- Laryngitis – when your voice box or vocal cords become irritated or swollen
- Glandular fever – a viral infection
Symptoms of sore throat include:
- A dry, scratchy throat
- Redness in the back of your mouth
- Bad breath
- A mild cough
- Swollen and red tonsils
- Swollen glands in your neck
Severe symptoms can be a sign of a bacterial infection which may require the pharmacist to supply antibiotics. As part of the new NHS Pharmacy First service, our pharmacists will be able to provide additional treatment options for severe sore throats (patients 5 years and over).
