Yasmin
Yasmin is a prescription only medication that can be supplied by our competent and trained pharmacist under a patient group direction, following a free consultation. If treatment is suitable for you, a supply can be made, otherwise a full refund will be issued. It is an oral combined contraceptive pill that contains two active ingredients, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol that prevents ovulation from occurring during the menstrual cycle. If used correctly, it will provide over 99% protection against pregnancy.
How does Yasmin work?
Pregnancy occurs when an egg is released from the ovaries and is fertilised by sperm. During a normal menstrual cycle, the ovaries release one egg each month, known as ovulation. This process is controlled by the two female sex hormones; progesterone and oestrogen. Yasmin contains two synthetic hormones, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol that mimic these two natural hormones. They do so by controlling the levels of each hormone in such a way that it prevents an egg from being released. Furthermore, the pill thickens the fluid in the cervix, making it difficult for the sperm to reach the uterus.
During a regular menstrual cycle, the wall of the uterus builds up in preparation for a fertilised egg. However, ethinylestradiol reduces this buildup, making it less likely that a fertilised egg will develop into an embryo.
Treatment details
There are 21 pills in a pack. Once you have finished taking these 21 tablets, you will stop taking the pill for 7 days. During this time you will have your normal bleed. After these seven tablet free days have passed you will need to begin your next pack of pills. Just like all hormonal contraceptives, yasmin will not protect you against any sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, it is recommended that you continue to use a barrier method such as a condom while using the pill.
Yasmin and acne
The hormones in yasmin help to control the production of oil by the skin, which will inhibit the pores from being blocked. This will help women who have previously struggled with acne or spots.
